SKUAST-K concludes 15-day training program for veterinary officers of Ladakh

The Division of Animal Nutrition, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry, SKUAST-Kashmir successfully concluded a 15-day Comprehensive Training Programme on “Field-Level Nutritional Interventions for Improving Small Ruminant Health and Productivity”, organized from April 7 to April 21, 2026 for Veterinary Officers of the Sheep Husbandry Department, UT Ladakh.

 

The programme was designed to strengthen the technical competence of field veterinarians in addressing nutritional challenges affecting small ruminants under field conditions.

 

Through a series of expert lectures, practical demonstrations, and interactive sessions, participants were sensitized to scientific feeding strategies, balanced ration formulation, pasture management, utilization of locally available feed resources, and innovative nutritional interventions aimed at improving animal health, productivity, and farmer livelihoods.

 

The training also focused on the development and field-level application of cost-effective feed technologies and nutritional supplements suited to the harsh agro-climatic conditions of Ladakh.

 

Moreover, expert lectures from other relevant disciplines were also delivered during the programme, enabling participants to gain a broader understanding of integrated approaches towards small ruminant health, management, and productivity under field conditions.

 

The programme concluded with a valedictory session where participants appreciated the practical relevance of the training and emphasized that the knowledge gained would significantly contribute to improving sheep and goat production systems in the region.

 

The Chief Guest of the event, Prof. Riyaz Ahmad Shah, Dean, FVSc & AH, Shuhama appreciated the efforts of the Division and emphasized that strengthening field-level nutritional interventions for improving animal health and productivity in the fragile and challenging agro-climatic conditions of Ladakh.

 

The Course Director, Prof. Haidar Ali Ahmad presented the course overview, while Course Coordinators, Dr. Yasir Afzal Beigh and Dr. Javid Farooq also spoke on the event and expressed confidence that the skills acquired during the programme would be effectively utilized in strengthening livestock production systems in Ladakh.
